Alhama de Murcia has a population of around 20,000 and has sprung up around the foot of a hill upon which perch the ruins of an ancient tower. The town is 176 metres above sea level and popular with tourists as there are so many historical sites of interest to visit – including a castle, the remains of Roman and Moorish baths (the town has its own thermal springs), and numerous churches. The nearby mountains are popular with walkers and climbers, and the natural park at Leyva is a must for ramblers and nature-lovers. The surrounding countryside is largely agricultural – with vineyards and orchards everywhere you look.

With plenty of hotels, bars and restaurants; a good selection of shops; and a primary and secondary school, Alhama de Murcia meets all the criteria for day to day living. The fast train between Lorca and Barcelona stops here and this, combined with Alhama’s proximity to an excellent motorway network, makes the town easily accessible.

At present, the nearest airport is Murcia’s San Javier – around 35 kilometres (Alicante’s El Altet airport is 95 kilometres away) but the new airport at Corvera is set to open in 2009 and is bound to increase this region’s profile with property seekers and holiday makers.
