Inland Spain: Inland Costa Blanca

Property on the Costa Blanca has long been a popular choice with Britons buying in Spain. The 170 miles of beautiful white sandy beaches draw British holidaymakers and property seekers like a magnet – and the area vies with the Costa del Sol for most popular Spanish holiday destination. With that popularity, though, comes the problem of overcrowding, increasing property prices, and a market close to saturation point. Venture as little as 10 miles inland of the Costa Blanca and it’s a different story, with small rural towns and villages, gorgeous countryside and significantly cheaper property available for sale. Go inland from the Costa Blanca and find mountain views and wide valleys with charming villages where every street has a story to tell.

Spain is a land of contrasts and inland Costa Blanca is no exception. In the North, the countryside is rocky and mountainous, and very green. The alicante region is one of Spain’s most fertile areas and a major centre of agriculture – fruit grown here is exported worldwide. It is perfect countryside for walkers and hikers – with twenty natural parks. South of Alicante, the land is flatter and more arid, though agriculture is still important here and there is a great deal of farmland. The South tends to be more popular with expats – especially Torrevieja on the coast and the surrounding areas.

Inland Costa Blanca is real Spain – people live and work here all year round, unlike on the coast where at some times of year it can feel like you are living in a ghost town. If you own a property in inland Alicante province, you will become part of a genuinely Spanish community – you will find it hard if you don’t speak any Spanish, but meet the locals halfway and you will generally find them to be welcoming and friendly. The range of property available is appealing: rustic farmhouses, fincas, cortijos, traditional village houses, and beautiful Spanish villas. Many properties come with their own land and outbuildings – maybe just what you are looking for if you intend to start your own business. It’s important to be realistic, of course, and decide what you truly want from a property. If you want to be able to pop out every morning and pick up your English newspaper in the corner shop, speak English to your neighbours, and have a massive hypermarket nearby then no, a run down finca in the middle of the Spanish countryside is probably not for you. But for a chance to really embrace life in Spain, maybe create your dream house from little more than a shell – inland Costa Blanca has a lot to recommend it.

The weather is, of course, a great attraction – 3000 hours of sunshine a year, very little rainfall between Spring and Autumn, and mild winters. Inland from the coast the summers are even hotter – as the mountain ranges act as a giant wind-break. Another big plus in favour of inland Costa Blanca is easy access – El Altet Airport, 11 kilometres from Alicante, is about 2 hours’ flying time from the UK. An alternative is Valencia Airport if you are heading to the Northern end of the Costa Blanca. The inland road infrastructure is excellent – with new motorways and modern dual carriageways making access throughout the region much easier than in the past.

It's easy to find what you want from a property in inland Costa Blanca as there is so much variety. If you want peace and quiet, and a rustic finca in the middle of nowhere – you can find it here. If you want more amenities: a good range of schools, supermarkets, medical care, markets and cinemas – you can find it in the big cities and towns like Alicante, Elda and Elche. If you want something between the two there are countless smaller towns like Aspe, Salinas, Villena, Novelda and Almoradi – all with their own unique appeal. Inland Costa Blanca enables you to match your property needs with an area that can meet them – and at much more competitive prices than on the coast. So what are you waiting for? Browse Country HomeEspana’s stunning properties inland of the Costa Blanca and take the next step towards making your dream home in inland Spain a reality.
