Private and international schools Spain

Many people who move to Spain choose private or international schools as an alternative to Spanish state schools. Around 20% of children in Spain are educated in a private school setting. Not all private schools are the same though most are co-educational. Different types of private schools, or escuelas privades, are as follows: parochial (ie., run by a religious organization – in Spain this is often the Catholic Church); fee paying Spanish schools which follow the Spanish curriculum; bi-lingual schools; or English-speaking International schools which follow the British National Curriculum. International schools have become a less popular choice amongst Britons moving to Spain over recent years – perhaps because of fears that they ‘ghetto-ise’ the British expat community. Although children do learn Spanish in an International school (and, indeed, some Spanish children attend International schools too) they do not integrate with the local community in the same way as children who attend the local state school. It’s also worth bearing in mind that there are fewer International schools in inland Spain – they tend to be concentrated in the coastal areas with a higher concentration of expats – and they invariably have waiting lists. On the plus side, private schools (as in Britain) tend to have smaller class sizes and offer a less formal and rote-learning based structure than Spanish State schools. Whether you choose the private sector over a state education is very much a personal decision – and will depend on many factors unique to you and your family.
