State schools

Most people who move to Spain choose to send their children to the local State school - in fact around 80% of the children of expats are educated in the state sector. State schools are free, though parents may have to buy books and materials. Very few state schools have a school uniform. Children can attend nursery from the ages of 3 to 5, though nursery places are not always easy to find and priority tends to be given to working parents. Children start primary school at 6, and usually move up to secondary school aged 12. Some leave at 16, others carry on their studies for a further two years in order to attain their Bachillerato and go on to University. However you choose to educate your child in Spain, whether in the private or state sector, there are pros and cons to consider. A child attending state school will be part of the Spanish community, and will integrate into Spanish life much more easily. Don’t underestimate the language dificulties though – while it’s true that children pick up languages much more easily than adults, this ability diminishes aflter the age of 8 – and a child of any age suddenly thrust into a new environment with no understanding of the language at all may be very unhappy. Try to ensure your child has at least a basic grasp of Spanish if your choice is the State sector. The good news is that once they have the basics – your children will be speaking fluent Spanish with their peers much sooner than you will!
